Abstract Painting About Death

Crici Fiction 505 is a painting that deals with death, loss and grief. My father died a horrible death to stomach cancer in 2005, and part of my healing process was to express my pain on canvas. I was completeing my Diploma Of Fine Arts at TAFE when he was diagnosed, so I decided to do a full body of works around the topic of grief. I used a lot of symbolism in this painting. I predominantly used blue paint as a metaphor about how I felt. The hour glass represents time, and it is quickly coming to an end. The railings are bars, eluding to a prison sentence, no escape. Then I added a lot of elements that directly relate to my father… his love of the beach, playing rummikub, riding a bike etc.

ABSTRACTION: Is not considered an accurate representation of the world around us. Basically, it uses colour, forms and gestural mark making to convey the artist’s interpretation or vision. Abstraction is used to convey a story or evoke a feeling. There is a myriad of different ways to approach abstraction in painting and I have developed a few distinct or unique styles. For this particular painting, I used a lot of symbolism to represent various parts of the narrative, plus I have objects that are clearly defined. based on what you can see in the painting, this painting is leaning towards semi-abstract or figurative.
