Leaving Home is a large ceramic plate exquisitely decorated with repeating geometric patterns. At first glance, the shapes resemble circles and triangles, but they hold a deeper, more symbolic narrative. The circular and triangular motifs encircling the edge of the plate evoke the structure of a human spine—a representation of resilience and strength. At the heart of the design, simplified human forms tell the poignant story of an ambitious woman leaving her family behind in pursuit of her dreams, symbolized by the search for a pot of gold. This plate is not just a decorative and functional piece; it is a rich tapestry of storytelling and symbolism, inviting viewers to reflect on themes of ambition, sacrifice, and the journey to self-discovery. The Leaving Home ceramic plate was entirely hand-crafted using traditional techniques to achieve its unique form and design. The process began with slab building, where a flat sheet of clay was carefully rolled out to an even thickness. This slab was then shaped and manipulated to form the base of the plate, ensuring smooth edges and a balanced structure. Once the basic shape was established, the plate was left to partially dry to a leather-hard state. At this stage, intricate design elements were planned. Then, using precision and a steady hand, the repeating geometric motifs and human forms were painted onto the surface. The plate was then custom-painted with underglazes to bring the narrative to life. The plate was left to dry completely before being placed in a kiln. The firing process involved bisque firing the plate at a high temperature to harden the clay, followed by glazing to enhance its durability and aesthetic appeal. Finally, a second firing at an even higher temperature ensured the colours became vibrant, the glaze smooth and glossy, and the plate fully functional. This meticulous process reflects the care, artistry, and symbolic depth embedded in Leaving Home, making it a one-of-a-kind creation.
